In order to change the apocalyptic future, the mutant soldier Cable traveled to the present and took the New Mutants under his wing, restructuring it as X-Force, a mutant strike team that would take a more proactive stance against threats to mutantkind.

X-Force initially fought the Mutant Liberation Front (M.L.F.), and the team has clashed with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, Deadpool, Magneto, the Skornn, S.H.I.E.L.D. and many others who would threaten the future Cable sought to protect.
